In the winter... very cold! Anywhere from -5 degrees to 20 degrees. (Jan - March). Spring reaches around 40-55. Summers range anywhere from 70-90.

If you are living in downtown Chicago, streeterville, lincoln park, west loop - then yes chicago is expensive.

hyde park, wrigleyville, lakeview, bucktown, wicker park are not too expensive.
