"Chicago"

One of the most beautiful historic cities in the U.S. From the buildings to the people the city is welcoming and has lots of activities to do each day.

"sweet home, chicago."

what can i say. i've lived in or outside of chicago my entire life.
my personal experience in chicago thus far has been nothing but positive. i live in an "up-and-coming" area where young people and students are beginning to move (logan square), but nonetheless has a deeply rooted puerto rican core. i need only to walk down the block to find incredible, authentic puerto rican, mexican and cuban food. alas, no starbucks for miles...you can decide for yourself whether that's good or bad. several small, friendly neighborhood bars are within walking distance, as well.
there is a rich bicycle culture here, and as many other cities do, we have critical mass once a month, as well as other interesting events including a "bike prom" for the messengers who deliver letters and packages throughout downtown. bike shops pepper each neighborhood and you can tell a foreigner by the way he drives around a bicyclist.
public transportation is a touchy subject for chicagoans. the chicago transit authority continues to raise costs of train and bus rides, and construction on the subways and 'el' trains hurt reliability of commute. where a train does not reach, though, a bus will take you, and unless you're trying to catch a train at three in the morning, you won't wait longer than 15 minutes.
in order to keep this from becoming a small novella (ode to chicago), i will end with this: if you enjoy urban culture, come to chicago. you can go see the sears (newly renamed "willis tower"), go on a riverboat tour, take pictures at the bean, walk through millennium park...do all of those things. you'll be surrounded by other tourists. but if you want to experience what chicago is REALLY like, hop on the blue line and take it to wicker park or to logan square, or take the red line to uptown. don't limit yourself to the tourist attractions that don't fully represent a city that is vast and colorful.
