The Faroe Islands

The Faroe Islands or Faeroe Islands or simply Faroe(s) or Faeroes (Faroese: Føroyar, Danish: Færøerne, Nynorsk: Færøyane, Bokmål: Færøyene, Old Norse/Icelandic: Færeyjar, Irish: Na Scigirí) are an island group situated between the Norwegian Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, approximately half way between Scotland and Iceland. The Faroe Islands are a part of the Kingdom of Denmark, along with Denmark proper and Greenland.

The Faroe Islands have been an autonomous province of Denmark since 1948. The Faroese have, over the years, taken control of most matters, some areas still remain the responsibility of Denmark, such as defense (though they retain their own coast guard), foreign affairs and law.

Description

The population of the Faroe Islands is largely descended from Viking settlers who arrived in the 9th century. The islands have been connected politically to Denmark since the 14th century. A high degree of self government was attained in 1948.
