I am hoping to go to Bali at Christmas time. Who has been there and what do you recommend for accommodations. I would prefer a house as we will be there for 3 weeks approximately. http://orencostation.blogspot.com

We were in Bali four years ago and can't wait to get back. You are wise to ask for tips from people who have been there. Three weeks is about the minimum we would stay next time, but it is worth moving around a bit and hotels are cheap. Rates are especially good right now. For a quiet place on the beach look at Sanur, where the Flashback hotel is our favorite--hosts Peter and Jan are the best and their driver/guide Made is knowledgeable and reasonable. Spend some time in Ubud from where you can take day excursions. Klub Koko above the town in the rice fields is a short hike down the ridge, but hard to get to by car--that keeps the traffic down. There are houses available for exchange or short term rent but again the hotels are inexpensive--next time we want to try Casa Luna. I would avoid staying in Kuta or Nusa Dua unless you like the club scene and lots of young Aussies or surf, although they''re worth a visit. Check the various travel sites--lonely planet, etc.--but don't assume you'll get a Bali secret from them--lots of people read them. If you need more specific info, let me know!
